Chapter Fifteen
Kerry woke to her cell phone vibrating at the edge of her night table. Reaching for it and sitting up in bed, she brought the device to her ear.
âHello?â she answered, still a bit groggy. She looked over at the digital alarm clock to see that it was 6:45 am.
âMs. Hamilton. Hi, itâs Peter.â
âYes, hi Peter,â Kerry rushed out, more alert than earlier. âDid you find something; anything?â she eagerly asked.
âSorry for calling so early. I did. Quite a bit, actually,â the man responded. âIt wasnât easy to get the information. I can tell you that.â
Thatâs why Iâm paying you the big bucks.
âWhat did you find out?â she asked.
âThe baby youâre looking for was adopted by a couple in Seattle.â
âDo you have a name?â she rushed to ask.
âNo, I donât. These things take a bit more time and a lot of patience,â the man cautioned. âIâll call you as soon as I have something more concrete for you.â
âOkay, thank you, Peter.â
After the call disconnected, Kerry sat up with her back pressed against the headboard, and her comforter pooled around her waist. The information the private investigator had just supplied her with played over in her mind as if it was on a loop. Her baby had been adopted by a Seattle couple. What were the odds that her baby would have ended up living so close to her? It felt surreal knowing that her daughter possibly had been within reach all these years, and she didnât know it. A few tears trickled down her cheeks as she stared at the empty space in front of her. Kerryâs thoughts continued to plague her about the fact she could have passed her child on numerous occasions and not even know it was her.
At seven thirty a.m., Kerry got up and made breakfast for herself and Sophia, who hadnât gotten in until late last night as her father had taken her out to eat. So much for the plans sheâd made.
âMmm, something smells really good in here.â Sophia yawned and stretched as she made her way into the kitchen.
âMorning, sweetie. Did you sleep well?â Kerry asked as she cut up strawberries to place atop the waffles she made.
âLike a baby,â came her daughterâs response as she drizzled syrup over her breakfast. She smiled at her response.
âI take it you had a good time with your father last night then,â she surmised.
âWe did,â Sophia confirmed. âWe went to that nice little restaurant that we used to go to by the marina back when you and dad...you knowâ¦when you were still together,â Sophia replied, ducking her head.
âIâm glad you enjoyed it andâ¦that you got to do it with him,â Kerry spoke, giving her a reassuring smile.
One thing she had been grateful for throughout the divorce process was that the girls had not been bothered by their separation, and she was glad that neither she nor Darren had ever encouraged them to take sides.
After the two enjoyed the breakfast Kerry had prepared, Sophia informed Kerry that she would be visiting the Willberry property to visit Aunt Becky and the sisters.
